How to Write a Best Man Speech

Chances are, if you've been chosen as a best man, you know the groom pretty well. And maybe by now you're aware that everyone is expecting you to give a best man speech - a toast - at the wedding reception. To help you prepare for the speech, here are just a few things you should remember.

*Be prepared! Don't wing it. Even the most quick-witted and glib of people (like you, of course!) can go numb when they're put on the spot. Take a lesson from the famous Mark Twain: "It usually takes me more than three weeks to plan a good impromptu speech."

Even if you don't feel like writing the whole thing down, at least take the time to jot down a few key points and phrases.

*It's okay to be funny, but be serious. Sure those are conflicting elements, but it's important to remember. If you're not a little bit funny, you could wind up boring the wedding guests.

Even so, it's vital to remember that your best man speech should be a respectful tribute to the couple's new life together. Both of them are taking their marriage seriously, and they need to know that you honor that. While sarcasm might be fun in the right situations, it is very dangerous territory and should NEVER be used in a wedding speech.

*Keep it brief. Please don't go on and on. Practice at least once in front of one other person!if their eyes start to glaze over, find something to cut!

*Watch the anecdotes. Telling stories about old girlfriends or reminding the assembled guests of a particularly embarrassing moment will not endear you to your friend's new wife. If your buddy's wife doesn't like you, don't expect to see much of your friend after the wedding is over.

*Talk about something you like or admire about the bride– if it's appropriate! See the previous tip about endearing yourself to her.

*Last but not least, be sincere. You were picked to be the best man for a reason. Your best man speech will be remembered with gratitude if you keep these points in mind and share in the joy of your friend's happiness.
